Steve Wolfe > Barfoot Lookout is atop Buena Vista Peak at 8,823 feet. So as you can imagine it's a great place for a fire lookout, which is seen here while looking north.
Steve Wolfe > Directly below you at the lookout lies the bowl of Barfoot Park and the grassy opening of the meadow, my next destination where there's a campground beckoning... :o)
Steve Wolfe > Evening light on the Chiricahuas looking southeast from just above Rustler Park.
Steve Wolfe > There are two high-mountain trails that can be accessed from the campground at Rustler Park; one is the Chiricahua Crest Trail which ends in 5.25 miles at Chiricahua Peak, at 9,795 feet the highest point in the mountains. The landscape one encounters on the hike shows scars from the 1994 Rattlesnake Fire, which burned a large portion of the high Chiricahuas. But the wildlife and trees are resilient...
Steve Wolfe > Looking south from the Lookout, you can see the spine of the Chiricahuas and Chiricahua Peak, at 9,795 feet the highest point in the mountains. The top of the peak is still heavily-forested, so the views from there are somewhat obscured. Here at Barfoot Lookout is the best place for the 360-degree views.
Steve Wolfe > The trail to Barfoot Lookout winds just below the east side of the ridge, providing near-treetop views of the trees and, if you're lucky, the birds at eye-level. As you can imagine, the views looking east are expansive, too.
Steve Wolfe > Barfoot Park in the early morning. It's a truly magical place, lying at the foot of Barfoot Lookout. There's dispersed campsites here, and the foundations of an old Boy Scout camp, plus an outdoor chapel on a spur trail, all remnants from a time when this area saw many more visitors. Nowadays you mostly have the place to yourself...
Steve Wolfe > According to my camera Exif, this was taken at 5:12am...Early-morning light casts its glow on the rock outcroppings up the Cave Creek Canyon Road.
