Steve Wolfe > An American Robin in southeast Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains, June 2008.
Steve Wolfe > Here's the major trail intersection up at the saddle...
Steve Wolfe > And nearby was this Western Bluebird posing prettily on one of the dead trees --
Steve Wolfe > Here's the view from the Chiricahua Crest Trail looking north. Evidence of the big Rattlesnake Fire of 1994 is everywhere. It was the largest fire in the Chiricahuas in 77 years, and according to reports its 200-foot-high flames were visible at night in the town of Douglas, nearly 40 miles away. Stands of mature Ponderosa Pine, some over 350 years old, were wiped out, and the land is turning into open meadow and aspen groves, radically altering the look of this area of the high Chiricahuas.
Steve Wolfe > The dead trees provide abundant habitat for birds such as the Hairy Woodpecker; here's a juvenile, distinguished from the adult by the red on its crown.
Steve Wolfe > Simply one of the most spectacular scenes in the whole of the desert Southwest, this shows the entrance to Cave Creek Canyon looking west from Foothills Road, just before Portal. It was taken around 5:45am, with the sun rising and moon setting.
Steve Wolfe > Once back on the trans-mountain dirt road from Herb Martyr campground, the way winds up the Chiricahuas, and spectacular views abound. It's truly one of the great unpaved road trips in the entire Southwest.
Steve Wolfe > Barfoot Lookout is atop Buena Vista Peak at 8,823 feet. So as you can imagine it's a great place for a fire lookout, which is seen here while looking north.
Steve Wolfe > Directly below you at the lookout lies the bowl of Barfoot Park and the grassy opening of the meadow, my next destination where there's a campground beckoning... :o)
